University of Leeds

The University of Leeds is a member of the Russell Group of renowned universities and is one of the largest higher education institutions in the United Kingdom. It was founded in the year 1874 as the Yorkshire College of Science. Leeds' emergence as an international center for the textile industry and apparel manufacture in the United Kingdom throughout the Victorian era is tied to the University's history. Later in 1884, it combined with the Leeds School of Medicine (founded in 1831 and), which was renamed Yorkshire College. The institution today houses 36,330 students, making it the UK's fifth-largest University (out of 169).
